May Day Italy: on the 1st of May there’s the Labor Day
The Labour Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated as International Workers’ Day in many places globally.
On the 1st of May Italy commemorates the labor union movement’s social and economic achievements. The May Day started initially as an attempt to celebrate workers’ achievements in their struggle for their rights and for better social and economic conditions.
The first Labor Day celebration in Italy was in the late 1800s to recognize workers’ achievements in fighting for their rights with public demonstrations or protest to improve their conditions.
It was cancelled under the Fascist Regime for about 20 years but was reintroduced in 1945.
On May 1, workers traditionally take the day off to eat, socialize, dance and attend concerts in cities such as Rome. The most famous event is the 1st of May Concert (“Concerto del Primo Maggio“), organized by Italian Labour Unions in Rome in Piazza San Giovanni, attended by a very large audience and involving participation of many famous bands and songwriters.
