Italian holidays: National and Republic Day on the 2nd of June
The Italian Republic Day is the Italian national holiday that celebrates the day when it became republic.
All over the world Italian embassies hold celebrations and Heads of State from all over the world send congratulations to the President of the Republic.
Why Italian National Day
This is one of the most important Italian public holidays which celebrates the birth of the nation.
Why Italian Republic Day
In Italy it commemorates the referendum of 1946, when Italians were asked to decide what form of government, either a monarchy or republic, to give to the country. It was the first constitutional referendum after World War II and the fall of Fascism
Until 1946 Italy was a kingdom ruled by the House of Savoy. On the 2nd of June 1946 Italy became a Republic after 85 years of monarchy. Thus, the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled.
How Italians celebrate their Independence Day
Every 2nd of June a grand military parade in the presence of the highest offices of the state is held in central Rome. Then, there’s the a deposition of a laurel wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (“Tomba del Milite Ignoto”), placed inside the Altare della Patria
Afterward, there’s a great show of the Frecce Tricolori, the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Aeronautica Militare
They spin and twirl in the air and the aircrafts carry the Italian tricolor flag into the sky thanks to their colored smoke system. In fact, the team’s aircraft are each equipped with smoke generators capable of emitting green, red and white colored smoke
Their aim is to kindle a profound sense of respect for those who, with passion and courage, have made all the people not just spectators, but a part of Italian excellence.
In the afternoon there’s the opening to the public of the Palazzo del Quirinale Gardens, official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, and with concerts performed by the band of the Italian Army, Italian Navy, Italian Air Force, Carabinieri, State Police, Guardia di Finanza, Penitentiary Police and State Forestry Department
